The purpose of the fire risk assessment on your premises is to identify fire hazards and remove or reduce the risk of those hazards causing harm to the occupants of premises.
This is achieved by the implementation of risk reduction measures, appropriate physical fire precautions and management arrangements that must be provided to ensure peoples safety in the event of a fire occurring.
Fire risk assessments carried out by Tees Safety Training Ltd consist not only of organised physical checks of the premises, but also a careful examination of appropriate records.
The information gathered during the fire risk assessment, is presented in a report, which highlights any deficiencies captured as a series of prioritised action for remedial work and to focus attention on critical areas to be corrected.
The fire risk assessment is carried out to accord with and utilise the pro-forma which form part of PAS79 (Fire Risk Assessment-Guidance and recommended methodology) which has been developed and published by the British Standards Institute (BSI)
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 came in to force on 1 October 2006 and replaced over 70 separate pieces of fire safety legislation. The RRO applies to most non-domestic premises in England and Wales, including the common parts of blocks of flats and houses in multiple occupation.
The purpose of the RRO is to simplify fire safety legislation and reduce the number of enforcing authorities that business have to deal with. The RRO abolished the requirement for businesses to have a fire certificate and replace it with a duty on the “responsible person” (usually the owner, occupier or the employer) to carry out a “Suitable and Sufficient” fire risk assessment and to implement appropriate fire safety measures to minimise the risk to life from fire.
An important requirement of the RRO is that all staff must be provided with adequate fire safety training and the training should be tested by fire drill.
Remember, the risk assessment process will reduce the risk of a fire occurring and the damage it could cause, as well as making your workplace a safer place to work and helping you to comply with the Regulations.
